Becoming a Patient in our Rehab Program
Medical eligibility is determined by our staff following the completion of a thorough evaluation. Evaluations are performed by a member of the Johns Hopkins University Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) faculty and staff, usually within 24 hours of your referral. This doctor or nurse can assess your condition at your bedside. If you are at home, your doctor can make a referral and our staff will arrange an outpatient visit at your convenience.
Because insurance coverage varies for our services, a pre-admission financial screening is completed to determine your insurance benefit. Authorizations and pre-certifications are obtained by our admission coordinators. Financial counseling is available for families who may need to make alternate financial arrangements.
Admission to our rehabilitation program depends on several important criteria:
- Physical condition requiring at least two rehabilitation services, such as physical therapy occupational therapy, speech-language therapy or psychology
- Medically stable
- Ability to follow instructions, learn and remember new skills
- Ability to participate in at least three hours of therapy a day, five days a week
- Reasonable post-rehab discharge plan
Along with this criteria, we have an expectation that family members be able to participate in the learning and support sessions.
