Pulmonary Services

Pulmonary medicine focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the respiratory tract. At MedStar Good Samaritan Hospital, our experts are constantly keeping up with trends in the field of pulmonology, in addition to specializing in caring for patients with shortness of breath (dyspnea). Our doctors and nurses work together efficiently, performing thorough reviews of patients’ medical histories and symptoms, followed by physical examinations focusing on the respiratory system, as well as treating interstitial lung diseases and pulmonary hypertension.

Our pulmonologists are closely inter-related with intensive care medicine and secondary prevention. In the pulmonary function laboratory, doctors and nurses have the capacity to perform sophisticated exercise testing, generally not available at other area hospitals, that helps diagnose difficult cases. They also are involved in both clinical and basic research of the respiratory system, and work with the patient’s primary care provider to assure the best treatment. Common diseases managed by pulmonologists include asthma, chronic bronchitis, emphysema, lung cancer, sleep apnea, and pneumonia.

Treatments of respiratory illnesses include medication, either by inhalation (steroids), or oral form (antibiotics). Following a patient’s primary evaluations, treatments may include surgery.
