Hospital President Receives Papal Honor
06/14/2007

His Eminence Cardinal William Keeler, Roman Catholic Archbishop of Baltimore, announced that Lawrence M. Beck, president of Good Samaritan Hospital, has been awarded the Papal Medal “Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice” (“For the Church and the Pope”) by Pope Benedict XVI for his outstanding service to the Catholic Church and the Baltimore community. Mr. Beck will receive the papal honor at a special ceremony on Sunday, June 24, at the Cathedral of Mary Our Queen. In announcing the award, Cardinal Keeler noted that Mr. Beck has been “instrumental in helping to maintain the Catholic identity of [Good Samaritan] hospital while expanding its services in the community and increasing its level of quality care.” He also was recognized for his continuing service to the Catholic community through his activity at his home parish of St. Pius X in Rodgers Forge. Most Reverend Francis Malooly, auxiliary bishop of Baltimore and Good Samaritan Hospital Board member, says Mr. Beck was honored for the strong faith and spirit he brings to Good Samaritan Hospital and his parish. “Larry lives out his faith, going over and above in fostering a Catholic identity. He has done that extremely well.” Mr. Beck has been at Good Samaritan since 1990, and has served as president of the Hospital since 1994 when the institution merged with Helix Health. During his tenure, he has led the hospital through a period of unprecedented growth. With the addition of emergency services and expanded medical and surgical capabilities, admissions grew more than 60 percent during the 1990s. Serving primarily the local communities of Northeast Baltimore, Good Samaritan Hospital has maintained a strong commitment to Catholic values in keeping with founder Thomas O’Neill’s vision of “caring and dignity for all.” Among the significant changes instituted by Mr. Beck have been the integration and expansion of a comprehensive outpatient rehabilitation network, innovative expense controls, and a focus on patient satisfaction and physician loyalty satisfaction with the Good Samaritan “putting you first” program. Good Samaritan Hospital has achieved premiere status among area hospitals, as judged by independent research agencies for inpatient, outpatient, and emergency services. Mr. Beck’s more than 30 years of experience in hospital management includes administrative training and subsequent leadership positions in several Maryland hospitals. His career began at Hutzel Hospital in Detroit, Michigan, where he held supervisory positions that led to an administrative trainee track. He holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Wayne State University and a master of business administration from George Washington University. Mr. Beck is a member of several professional societies, including the American College of Healthcare Executives, and has served on the board of the National Kidney Foundation of Maryland. He resides in Towson, and is married with four children. Good Samaritan Hospital, a member of MedStar Health, is a 346-bed community teaching facility located at the corner of Loch Raven Boulevard and Belvedere Avenue in northeast Baltimore. With Centers of Excellence in orthopedics, rheumatology, rehabilitation, and renal care, Good Samaritan serves people throughout Maryland, the Mid-Atlantic and internationally in these advanced specialties.
