Good Samaritan Hospital Recognized as 2009 Delmarva Foundation Excellence Award Winner
11/24/2009

The Delmarva Foundation for Medical Care, the Medicare Quality Improvement Organization for Maryland, recently awarded the 2009 Delmarva Foundation Excellence Award for Quality Improvement to the Good Samaritan Hospital of Maryland. Good Samaritan is one of five hospitals in Maryland to win the award so far this year.

“Delmarva is proud to recognize Good Samaritan Hospital as a 2009 recipient of the Delmarva Foundation Excellence Award for Quality Improvement,” said Nancy Friedley, M.D., Delmarva Foundation Medical Director. “Good Samaritan has demonstrated significant and sustained quality improvement practices over the past year by receiving high marks for treating heart attack, congestive heart failure, surgical, and pneumonia patients. Delmarva encourages Good Samaritan’s continued success in exceeding its already very high, internal quality improvement goals.”

The Delmarva Foundation Excellence Award for Quality Improvement recognizes individual hospital performance improvement in four national inpatient clinical areas: acute myocardial infarction [AMI], heart failure, surgical care, and pneumonia. To receive the award, hospitals must meet or exceed the following criteria:

• Score 90 percent or above on 16 required measures, such as aspirin given to patients upon admission for AMI and initial antibiotic received by pneumonia patients within six hours of their arrival at the hospital.

• Sustain the improvement for at least three consecutive quarters.

"Receiving this award is a testament to the dedication of our staff and physicians, who are committed to providing the best possible care to every patient, every day," says Lawrence M. Beck, president of Good Samaritan Hospital. “Quality and safety for our patients requires teamwork, and this award recognizes the Good Sam team – a ‘cast of hundreds’ – that it takes to achieve excellence.”
